Low light houseplants
All plants need light, how much though will depend on the plant variety.
It can be so hard to know what you can grow if your home tend to be on the darker side.
The ideal would be a bright window sill, this doesn’t need to be in direct sun. In fact most houseplants do not like direct sun, the tend to prefer bright indirect light.
While most plants need this bright light there are some that will survive in low light although they will prefer more if you can give it.
Some options include spider plants, snake plants, some ficus and philodendrons.
There is always the option of using a grow light if you really don’t have any bright locations. These are a great idea and with lots of choices who says grow lights need to be ugly check out how we fixed a dark corner in our home.
With so many options out there, you are sure to find something to suit your personal needs.
Things to consider when purchasing houseplants
- Is the plant healthy and strong before purchasing it.
- How large could this houseplant get.
- Where will the plant be placed in your home.
- How much light will the plant get in that location.
- What are its watering requirements.
- Are there any problems or pests that this plant may be susceptible too.

Caring for Houseplants
If you own the right houseplants, ones that suit you personally and fit with your home then they are very easy to care for and require very little.
Most of your houseplants wont even need repotting very often. I have noticed people do this more often than is required. If you really want to do this then aim for every couple of years at a minimum.
If you want to keep a plant on the smaller side then trimming the root instead of repotting may be more beneficial. Check out this video from everything plants it is very informative
Water
Over watering is one of the biggest mistakes we makes with houseplants
During the cooler winter months your plants will likely only need to be watered once a month. But in the warmer months of spring and summer this is when they will also be growing then watering once a week will likely be required.
Although if it is in lower light then watering may be less frequent than even this. If all else fails the do the finger test. Stick your finger into the soil and if it is dry water it. If you are like me though and don’t want to get a dirty finger then why not try a moisture meters they really are a game changer. I highly recommend having one if you can.

Soil
This doesn’t need to be changed that often once every couple of years will be sufficient.
Use a sterilized indoor potting soil. The reason for this is that this soil has been treated and tends to kill any pests, weeds or disease that may live in the soil. Trust me this is worth it.
I once had tiny flies hatch in my soil and they were around for weeks which is pretty nasty and not something I would recommend.
Feeding houseplants
Feed your houseplants a good quality plant food made specifically for houseplants. This will also be marketed as tropical plant food.

You need to use the right for so that it has the right amount of nutrients for these kinds of plants.
Feed them once a month during spring and summer. They will be growing more during this time using more energy so feeding will be a benefit to your houseplants.
