Check out this free knitted coasters pattern made from macrame rope. They are so easy to make and yet make a statement. Make up 4 or 5 and give them as gift.
You have a try out this free knitted coasters pattern. I love the look of knitting. I will always prefer a knitted item over a crocheted one any day. If you want to get into knitting and do not want to do the obligatory scarf,
With that said if you are a beginner to the handcrafting world of knitting and crochet. Then I would absolutely try crocheting first. It is brilliant when starting out, as it is very forgiving. Unlike knitting, that can take a bit more coordination and isn’t quite as forgiving if you accidently drop a stitch. If that sounds more like what you want, then why not head over and try my Crochet potholder pattern instead.
If you are still here and want to head into the realm of knitting, welcome. This knitted coasters pattern is ridiculously easy. You could probably whip up 4 or 5 in one night.

What you will need and where to get it
- 3mm or 4mm Macrame rope. There are quite a few options out there. This is the one I used and I love the quality. They do sometimes sell out so be warned. Click here.
- Knitting needles. Size 9mm or 10mm. If you choose to use 3mm cord you will need the 9mm needles and for the 4mm cord you will need the 10mm needles. I really like circular needles, to me they are a lot less bulky. The cable will need to be around 80cm or more. Click here for the link to what I use. Yes i am a metal needle girl, I like the feel a lot more as I knit. If you would prefer to use normal needles in bamboo then Click here
- Chunky embroidery needle. Most come in packs which i annoying to have so many but to be honest I am always losing them. I tend to use the plastic ones, because the cord is so thick its easier to thread through the larger eye holes. Click here
- Scissors
How to make your easy free knitted coasters pattern made with macrame rope.
This pattern is based primarily for the 4mm rope and 10mm needles. In the brackets I have included the information for the 3mm cord and 9mm needles. I have added links below to my favorite videos if you are unsure how to do any of the stitches.
Cast on 8 stitches (10 st) using the long tail method or any cast on method you prefer.
Knit across the row turn and repeat
After completing 11 rows (15 rows). Cast off for the 12th row (16th row) using just a basic cast off.
Sew in any ends and cut the tails off.
Now repeat this process 3 or 4 more times so you have a set of coasters to use or gift to someone you love.

I also prefer to use metal needles but I know a lot of beginners use bamboo and some say you have to use them. Just find what works for you. This may take time but don't feel pressured into what others tell you you should be using or what happens to be the in thing to use right now.
