This knitted teapot cozy is a really nice pattern to knit up, despite how the fisherman’s rib appears it is a simple stitch. The faux fur pom pom also adds some fun, turning this teapot cozy into a small bobble hat.

Tools and materials for the knitted teapot cozy

    • 7mm Knitting needles, straight or circular. I prefer circular personally but use whichever you are most comfortable using.
    • Chunky weight yarn of choice
    • Stitch holder or scrap yarn.
    • Embroidery needle with a big eye. I really like to use these plastic needles.
    • Scissors
    • Faux fur pom pom around three inch in size. I love these ones they are great quality.

    The stitches used

Primarily, the stitches we are going to be using for the pattern will include knit, purl, and, additionally, knit one below.

To start the teapot cozy pattern with will use a long tail cast on. I find this type of cast on the easiest and quickest, but if you like to cast on a different way then use the technique you are most comfortable with.

    YouTube video

Knit and purl stitches are fundamental knitting stitches that are in all patterns, but the knit one below is a little different.

Decreases for the teapot cozy will be done with a CDDp, this decrease is a vertical decrease. This means that instead of the stitch leaning to either the left of right the stitch will sit straight up. Knit by slipping two stitches knit wise, then moving them to the left needle together and purling those two stitches along with the third stitch. Hence decreasing two stitches at once. Check out this video tutorial I found it very helpful.

    The fisherman’s rib

This stitch creates a lovely chunky ribbed effect, it is knit by alternating either a purl or knit depending on the row with a knit one below. By knitting one below it makes the knit stitch look bigger than it actually is.

To knit one below means you will insert the needle into the loop directly below the next stitch on the needle and knit it as you normally would.

As you can see in the pictures below, they illustrate how this will be done on the purl row

In this next set of pictures you can see the knit row will look slightly different than the purl row. The loop of the stitch that you will be going into is at the back.

    Finishing the pattern

To finish the knit instead of using a classic bind off stitch we will be gathering the stiches. We will be placing the stitches onto an embroidery needle, then pulling the end closed. A bit like you would for a drawstring. You will also need to make sure that you have a nice long tail as you will be using this to sew up the seam.

Once it is all sewn and the ends have been woven in a trimmed it is time to add the pom pom.

If you were able to get the same pom poms as I tagged above then you should notice an elastic loop. Use this loop to attach the pom pom. I used more scrap yarn to do this.

You should now have a completed knitted teapot cozy.

    Difficulty: Intermediate

    Abbreviations

    • St – Stitch
    • CO – Cast on
    • K – Knit
    • P – Purl
    • K1B – Knit one below (See post above or video)
    • ** – Repeat the stiches between the *
    • CCDp – This is a two stitch decrease. Slip two stitches knit wise to the right needle one at a time. Slip these two stitches back to the left needle picking them both up together, with the left needle going in from right. Purl these two stitches along with the next third stitch together. *I have linked a video if you need to see this done.

    How-to

    • Cast on 33 St
    • 1. K
    • 2. P, K1B, repeat to end finishing with P St (even number rows)
    • 3. K, *K, K1B* repeat ** , K last 2 St (odd number rows)
    • 4- 7 Repeat row 2 and 3
    • 8. P, K1B repeat for 16 St, place the last 17 St on a stitch holder (this can be a piece of scrap yarn)
    • 9. K, K1B repeat, K last 2 St
    • 10. P, K1B repeat
    • 11 – 16 Repeat rows 9 and 10, Cut the yarn leaving a tail. Place all of these St on a stitch holder, place the other held St back onto the needle.
    • 8..1 P, K1B, Repeat to end
    • 9.1 K, *K, K1B* Repeat **
    • 10 – 16 Repeat rows 8.1 and 9.1 . Place the held Stitches back onto the needle.
    • 17- 23 Repeat rows 3 and 2.
    • 24. P, K1B for 8 St, CCDp, *K1B, P* repeat ** for another 9 St, CCDp, *K1B, P* repeat ** to end (29 St)
    • 25-29. Repeat row 3 and 2
    • 30. P, K1B for 6 st, CCDp, *K1B, P* repeat ** for another 7 St, CCDp, *K1B, P* repeat ** to end (25 St)
    • 31. Repeat rows 3 and 2

    Binding off

    • To Bind off we are going to place all of the St onto an embroidery needle and pull them together like a drawstring. To do this cut the yarn leaving a long tail, thread the needle with the yarn and going from the end of the work to the start threat the needle through all of the St on the knitting needle. once all of the stitches have been added slip them off the knitting needle. Pull tight and tie off.
    • Do not cut the tail yet we are going to sew up the seam. Sew the edges together a small ways down. Place the cozy onto the teapot to see where thr handle sits, continue sewing the the seam down to the top of the handle. Weave the yarn down one edge to the base of the handle and continue to sew up the seam tie off and weave in the tail. Weave in an other tails and cut the ends.

Sew on the pom pom using either scrap yarn or with a needle and thread depending on your pom pom.
